Jersey Butterfly Monitoring Scheme Training Day

Love butterflies ? Are you Wild About Jersey? Come and learn how to identify them and become part of the Jersey Butterfly Monitoring Scheme.

Event details

The event will cover all the things you need to be a Wild Volunteer recording butterfly sightings in Jersey.

The times are approximate but give you an idea how the day will run

10:00 Arrival and refreshments – tea and coffee

10:15 Introduction – Jon Rault from the Jersey Biodiversity Centre and Tina Hull from Natural Environment – an overview of the day.

10:25 Survey methodology – a simple, clear, what you have to do guide.

10:50 Recording habitat change – perhaps the field has been ploughed or planted and how to note this.

10:55 How to enter your data on UKBMS.org.

11:00 Scheme admin. Sounds dull ? We can sign up new volunteers , give you an area to record in and sort all this year’s paper work . Risk assessments. Health and safety. Volunteer agreements.

11:15 Refreshments – tea and coffee

11:30 Butterfly Identification – Lots of tips from Jon Rault on how to identify Jersey’s butterfly species.

13:15 Lunch – sandwiches and refreshments provided.

14:15 Caterpillar foodplants – some caterpillars are fussy eaters !

14:35 Big Butterfly Count, Garden Butterfly Survey and Flower-Insect Timed (FIT) Counts – You may not be able to commit to a whole Summer’s butterfly recording but there are other ways you can be involved.

15:00 Practical demonstrations in the Zoo grounds of how to do a Flower-Insect Timed (FIT) Count with Jersey Biodiversity Centre Education Officer Sarah Maguire.

16:00 Finish

Note: Please bring study shoes/outdoor clothes for the practical demonstrations
